A groundbreaking clash between rugby’s two great codes could soon become reality — but not everyone is convinced it should.
A proposal has emerged for an unprecedented hybrid-rules rugby match in 2026, potentially bringing together England’s national rugby league and rugby union teams in a high-profile exhibition game. The concept, which blends rules from both disciplines, has been put forward by Hybrid Rugby, an Australian company that has spent more than ten years trying to make the concept take off globally.
But here’s where it gets complicated: organizing such a match means navigating the tricky politics of both the Rugby Football League (RFL) and the Rugby Football Union (RFU), as well as squeezing it into their already packed calendars. Each organization runs independently with separate schedules and priorities — and that’s before considering player availability and commercial agreements.
For England’s rugby league team, the expanded Super League season in 2026 already leaves virtually no room for additional fixtures, according to recent reports. Meanwhile, the England rugby union side will be kicking off their first Nations Championship campaign, taking up their standard Test match windows. To add another layer of difficulty, the RFU’s agreement with Premiership clubs carefully limits when elite players can be released for extra matches, ensuring they stay fresh for key tournaments.
Rhodri Jones, managing director of RL Commercial, confirmed that the league has received an official enquiry about Hybrid Rugby. "We haven’t yet evaluated this specific proposal fully," he said, adding that there are numerous factors to consider before any decision could be made. However, he also left the door open: "If we genuinely believe this can bring something positive to the sport, we’re open to exploring it."
The idea of uniting rugby’s two codes isn’t entirely new. When rugby union turned professional in the mid-1990s, fans were treated to some memorable cross-code experiments, such as the famous encounters between Bath and Wigan — then the powerhouses of each sport. Those matchups featured one game under league rules at Maine Road in Manchester and another under union rules at Twickenham. Wigan, boasting stars like Andy Farrell, Shaun Edwards, and Va’aiga Tuigamala, won the league match emphatically 82–6 but fell 44–19 in the union rematch.
A similar contest took place in 2003 when Sale Sharks triumphed over St Helens in a game split between both codes — one half each. More recently, the annual “745 Game,” launched in 2024 to raise awareness and funds for motor neurone disease, has featured mixed rules and retired legends from both forms of rugby.
Hybrid Rugby’s most notable showcase so far occurred in 2015, when Sydney’s storied union club Randwick faced off against the Western Suburbs Magpies, a traditional rugby league side. The format introduced creative rules, such as a 60-second time limit for teams to cross the halfway line. Teams play under league rules in their own half, switching to union rules once they advance into opposition territory — a design intended to preserve the tactical flavor of both sports while creating faster, more unpredictable gameplay.
Still, opinions remain deeply divided. Traditionalists from both codes fear the hybrid format could blur identities and erode each sport’s heritage, while innovators argue it could bring in new global audiences and revive interest in rugby’s broader culture. And this sparks a big question: should rugby protect its old boundaries, or embrace bold experiments that challenge the status quo?
