Kasese District's Fight Against Climate Disasters: A Community's Resilience (2025)

Kasese District: Battling the Fury of Nature's Wrath

In the face of relentless heavy rains, Kasese District is taking proactive steps to brace for potential disasters. With a history of devastating floods, landslides, and river overflows, the district is leaving no stone unturned to protect its residents and infrastructure.

A Vulnerable Landscape
Kasese's unique geographical features, including its mountainous terrain and river valleys, make it inherently susceptible to climate-related emergencies. The local communities have borne the brunt of seasonal rains for years, losing homes, farmland, and essential infrastructure.

Community Preparedness: The First Line of Defense
District Chairperson Eriphazi Muhindi emphasizes the importance of community preparedness and environmental management in mitigating disasters. "Kasese is disaster-prone, and we experience the consequences annually. We've continuously raised awareness about preparedness measures, such as tree planting, good agronomic practices, and rainwater harvesting. Unmanaged rainwater can lead to destructive gullies," Muhindi explained.

Relocation for Safety
With intensifying rainfall, authorities advise residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to temporarily relocate to safer zones. "We encourage residents in high-risk areas to seek temporary refuge, even if it's at a neighbor's home in a safer location. As a district, we lack the resources to control these rivers alone," Muhindi added.

River Stabilization Projects: A Ray of Hope
The government has completed studies and designs for the River Nyamwamba Stabilization Project, with a similar initiative underway for River Nyamugasani. A significant intervention of 363 billion shillings has been approved for River Nyamwamba, but the lack of clear implementation timelines has caused anxiety among the local communities. "Our people understand the real danger. We're preparing them, but we need clarity on the River Nyamugasani allocation and a faster rollout of these interventions," Muhindi said.

The IDP Camp Dilemma
Leaders are advocating for the urgent relocation of families who have spent five years in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, despite prior government assurances of secured land for resettlement. "It's a reflection of our country's shortcomings when people remain in an IDP camp for so long. Relocation must be expedited," said Richard Bomera, Chairperson of the Nyamwamba Catchment Management Committee.

A Dedicated Evacuation Center
In collaboration with development agencies, Kasese district has established a specialized evacuation center to accommodate families displaced by emergencies. This center is a crucial step in ensuring the district's ability to respond swiftly and effectively to potential disasters.

Staying Vigilant
As the heavy rains persist, authorities urge communities to remain alert, embrace early evacuation, and cooperate with response teams. By working together, they can minimize the impact of potential disasters and protect lives and property.

And this is the part most people miss...
While Kasese District is taking significant steps to prepare for disasters, the ongoing heavy rains and the lack of clear timelines for critical interventions highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive disaster management strategy.
