Joseph Silk, a physics and astronomy professor at Johns Hopkins, emphasizes the significance of dark matter, stating, "It dominates the universe and holds galaxies together. We're desperate to detect it." He believes the gamma-ray excess at the galaxy's center could be our initial clue.
In a recent study, scientists created a map predicting dark matter's location in the Milky Way. During its early years, smaller dark matter systems and other materials converged towards the galaxy's center, increasing dark matter collisions. These maps, along with simulations, suggest the gamma-ray glow originates from dark matter, matching real-world observations.
However, there's a twist. Old neutron stars, when reactivated, could also emit light, explaining many of the same observations. For this theory to hold, scientists must adjust their calculations to suggest a higher number of pulsars than currently observed.
Researchers await another experiment that could provide definitive proof. If the gamma rays exhibit higher energy, they likely originate from stars; lower energy rays probably result from dark matter collisions. Silk believes a clean signal would be the ultimate proof.
