Prepare to be captivated! The Last Dinner Party's From the Pyre is a theatrical masterpiece, a rollercoaster of emotions that dives deep into the human experience. While their 2024 debut, Prelude to Ecstasy, might have leaned more heavily on the meta, Pyre showcases the band's signature blend of sublime artistry and dramatic flair.
Love, heartbreak, deception, and transformation – the album is a tapestry woven with epic themes. The instrumentation, while perhaps a touch more restrained this time around, still delivers high drama. But here's where it gets controversial: is high drama always a good thing? Can it be both spellbinding and exhausting? Thankfully, The Last Dinner Party's mastery of composition, songwriting, and vocal delivery ensures they mostly hit the mark.
Take, for instance, "Agnus Dei." Melodic guitars dance through the verses and choruses, with Abigail Morris's vocals, equally at home on Broadway or in Vegas, painting vivid pictures of love's beguiling nature. "One kiss and I was disemboweled," she sings, drawing you into the heart of the story.
Then there's "Count the Ways," which plunges into the stormy seas of romance. Contrasting raw, garage-inspired riffs with elegant strings and soaring vocals, the band expertly blends the real and the abstract. They clearly draw inspiration from artists like Kate Bush, Queen, and even Lady Gaga, but they've successfully forged their own unique sound, exploring the inherent tensions of love and attraction.
"This Is the Killer Speaking" is built around a driving guitar part and straightforward drumbeats. But who is this killer? The track explores the adversarial nature of relationships, presenting a character that morphs into the Western world, the lover, and even oneself. It's a reminder of Christopher Shipman's prose-poem collection The Movie My Murderer Makes, where the killer is a twin, a stranger, a cosmic stalker, and a part of the narrator's own personality.
"Woman Is a Tree" is another example of the band's ability to create mythic scenes. The song's lightly picked acoustic guitar and restrained synths, combined with ethereal backing vocals, evoke the witch scene from Macbeth. Meanwhile, "I Hold Your Anger" features a saloon-style piano, a passionate vocal performance, and imagery of suffering and metamorphosis. Morris embraces the role of the protective lover, but like Medea, her caring instincts are laced with volatility. "I'm not sure whose knife I carry," she admits.
If most of Pyre paints a picture of life and love as turbulent, "The Scythe" offers a moment of stoic reflection. "Don't cry, we're bound together / Each life runs its course," Morris sings, acknowledging the impermanence of all things. The closing track, "Inferno," is a folk-rock gem, with chugging drums and sinewy guitars, where Morris strikes a balance between buoyancy and bravado.
With Pyre, The Last Dinner Party demonstrates their mastery of instrumental dynamics. Mega themes are grounded by Morris's confessional stance and first-person narratives. The album is filled with hooks, ensuring the listener remains engaged. It's ambitious, gloriously messy, and wickedly entrancing.
