Imagine unearthing secrets from millions of years ago, a thrilling adventure that just got even more exciting! South Africa, renowned for its fossil treasures, has revealed a remarkable discovery - animal tracks dating back approximately 3 million years. This find is not just a first for the region but a global sensation.
Our team at the African Centre for Coastal Palaeoscience has been on an incredible journey, studying ancient species by deciphering their traces from the Pleistocene Epoch, a period known as the Ice Ages. Over 15 years, we've identified an impressive 350 vertebrate tracksites along the coast, each a snapshot of a bygone era.
But here's where it gets controversial... We knew there was more to uncover, even older traces, further inland. And we were right! The Wankoe Formation, a series of cemented dunes, revealed its secrets, dating back an astonishing 3 million years.
However, finding these fossils was no easy feat. Suitable rock outcrops were scarce, and those we did find were often eroded and calcified, making track identification challenging. Accessing potential sites was also an issue, with much of the formation on private property.
Despite these obstacles, our team persevered. We focused on well-preserved rock layers, and our efforts paid off. One of our team members, Given Banda, made a breakthrough discovery near his home community, and from there, our journey into the Wankoe Formation began.
The results of our findings were recently published, and they are nothing short of extraordinary. The Wankoe Formation is a treasure trove of fossils, with vertebrate tracks more common than we ever imagined. These tracks are a window into the past, offering a glimpse of the Pliocene epoch, a period from 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago.
But why are these discoveries so significant? Well, for starters, they might hold the key to understanding body fossils better. We've already found traces of creatures like giraffes and giant tortoises, which were previously unknown in the region based on body fossil records. This discovery challenges our understanding and opens up new possibilities.
And this is the part most people miss... There's a chance we might find traces of our human ancestor species in the Wankoe Formation. While we haven't found conclusive evidence yet, the potential is there, and it's an exciting prospect that keeps us exploring.
Another intriguing aspect is the nature of the tracks themselves. Unlike most fossil tracks, these are raised above the surface, a rare phenomenon. To understand this, imagine walking on a moist, cohesive dune surface with a strong wind blowing. Your tracks will initially form as depressions, but over time, the wind will blow away the surrounding sand, leaving your tracks raised. It's a fascinating natural process, and one that has preserved these ancient footprints.
Our subsequent explorations have continued to bear fruit. We've discovered that even weathered rocks can sometimes preserve tracks, and we've also found body fossils, including trees, roots, and bone material, all embedded in these unique layers of wind-blown, hardened sand.
The Wankoe Formation is a treasure chest of ancient secrets, and we're only just beginning to unlock its mysteries.
